The Phoenix Suns and Central High School have launched an education-based partnership, the team announced Friday in a pep assembly at the school.
The new partnership, called SunsCentral, will focus on keeping struggling students in school by focusing on four factors: success int he classroom, attendance, mentoring and encouraging students to participate in a work-study program.
“We’re starting with four additional teachers that we’re providing,” said Phoenix Suns Owner Robert Sarver. “They’re going to be working in the class, but most importantly, after class helping with tutoring, primarily in math and in English, which are the two areas that are the most important in terms of the high school testing.”
The first challenge is to drop the absence rate from 7.5 percent to 6.5 percent. If students drop the rate, the Suns will provide a halftime show at one of the school’s basketball games.
The partnership is being funded through a $500,000 grant over two years.
