PHOENIX — There are more help wanted ads for several careers across the country.
CareerBuilder has come out with a list of several jobs where the number of job listings have grown at least 30 percent in the past year. Software engineer topped the list with a 74 percent increase.
It seems a lot of people are hitting the road. An uptick in manufacturing has listings for truck drivers up by 45 percent, but driver Mack Jones said the profession isn’t for everyone.
“The long hours,” he said, “staying away from the family. The money right now may not be the greatest, so that might be a deterrent.”
For aspiring chefs, now may be a good time to pursue the dream. Restaurant and food service listings are up 34 percent.
James Porter is the chef at Petite Maison restaurant in Scottsdale. He said the Food Network and Iron Chef have changed his profession.
“You used to be a humble craftsman in your trade,” he said. “It wasn’t fancy or didn’t have the TV sensation that it does now. Now it’s definitely turned into a reality rock star sort of role.”
Porter said he only hires people who are serious about being a chef.
“They believe in that versus believing in possibly the stardom that may or may not ever come,” he said.
Other jobs that are high on the list include financial analyst and video editor.
