Arizona joined 48 other states with new K-through-12 academic standards.
The standards focus on English language, arts and math. Governor Jan Brewer said the updated standards are essential for Arizona.
“I pledge to support our schools, our teachers and our students through this exciting, but challenging transition,” said Brewer. “Helping our students to become college and career ready is also essential to the economic health and welfare of our state.”
She also said the standards are internationally benchmarked to provide world class education.
Superintendent of Public Instruction John Huppenthal said the standards will help in creating a better education system.
“The design to make students prepare for success in college, career and life,” said Huppenthal.
