A man who was holed-up inside a San Tan Valley home Tuesday is now in custody.
Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Brandon Jones said when the SWAT team entered the home, they found Mark Matheny trying to take his own life.
“They located the suspect on the second-story trying to hang himself with a telephone cord,” Jones said.
Police said the 37-year-old Matheny was wanted for the attempted murder of his wife who was found beaten and stabbed last week.
Skyline Ranch Elementary was locked down along with the surrounding Agrarian Hills area while Matheny was barricaded inside the home.
The lockdown was lifted about 4:30 p.m. Students were permitted to leave on one bus at a time.
The barricade situation ended about 5:45 p.m.
Matheny and his wife are both expected to fully recover.
