A wanted man allegedly assaulted officers when they tried to arrest him, the Mesa Police Department said in a release.
The man, identified as Roland Lederer, was first contacted by police for a city code violation. A background check reveled that he had warrant out for his arrest.
When officers informed Lederer that they had a warrant for his arrest, Lederer began to walk away. As the officer grabbed him in an attempt to make an arrest, Lederer allegedly fought back, pushing one officer down and ending up on top of the other.
The officer who was knocked down got up and delivered numerous punches to Lederer, who continues to fight. The officer then deployed a Taser and numerous shocks were required to get Lederer under control.
Officers sustained minor injuries.
Lederer was taken to a local hospital for treatment and booked on charges of two accounts of aggravated assault on an officer, one count of resisting arrest, obstructing a public thoroughfare and the original warrant for failure to appear.
