Two Valley teachers were honored in the White House on Friday for their efforts to improve their community.
Phoenix Union High School District teachers Selina Alonzo and Guadalupe Mesa received a Presidential Commitment to Excellence Award for their work with Hispanic students who have limited English.
“I’m learning their language and they help me all the time,” said Meza. “So I help them. I say, ‘You help me, I help you.’ It’s always a collaboration in my classroom.”
Only 10 teachers in the nation were selected for the honor.
