A Thursday shooting forced three schools in Avondale to go on lockdown, police said.
The shooting took place in the 100 block of W. Brinker Drive, near Central and Western avenues, when two men opened fire on an ice cream truck for unknown reasons.
Estrella High School and Lattie Coor Elementary were placed on lockdown as a precaution, but that was lifted about 2:45 p.m. Agua Fria High School was taken off lockdown about 3:45 p.m. Students were expected to be released by 4:00 p.m.
“We’re just letting our investigators secure the scene before 1,500 students walk in the area,” said Avondale Police Sgt. Brandon Bussee.
The man in the ice cream truck was hospitalized with a gunshot wound. His condition is unknown.
The man’s wife was also in the ice cream truck, but she was unharmed.
The suspects fled the area on foot in an unknown direction and are still at large.
