PHOENIX — A three-mile light rail extension in Phoenix that was put on hold during the recession is back on track.
Hillary Foose with Valley Metro said work begins early next year on the Bethany Home Road to Dunlap Avenue route and the trains should be rolling by 2016.
Signs announcing the project went up Thursday morning and construction will begin early next year.
“Our ridership forecast tells us that we will add about 5,000 new light-rail riders to the system at a minimum,” Foose said. “We’re heading up into a highly residential community with lots of strong neighborhoods and schools.”
The project will include three stations and a new park-and- ride lot.
