Thieves steal almost 40 school bus batteries

Police are searching for suspects in the weekend theft of 36 batteries from school buses belonging to the Laveen School District.
The batteries were stolen from a secured parking lot located at 9401 S. 51st Avenue sometime between 5:00 p.m. on Aug. 24 and 4:00 a.m. on Aug. 27.
The thieves cut a hole in a chain link fence to access the lot.
In total, the thieves broke into 12 buses, stealing three CARQUEST brand batteries from each bus.
“Right now, we’re estimating the cost of the batteries and the damage that happened to the school buses to be well over $3,000,” said Jeff Sprong with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.
Students who are bused to school were about 45 minutes late on Monday, said Karen Menge with the Laveen Elementary School District.
