A five-story, $25 million addition to the downtown Phoenix YMCA broke ground on Friday with the cooperation of Arizona State University’s downtown campus.
“The building itself with be about 63,000 square feet added to the existing Y,” said ASU planner Richard Stanley.
The new building, to be called the “Y at ASU,” will have plenty of gym space, a basketball court and a pool on the roof.
“We will also have a floor of classroom space that will support our exercise and wellness program that does its teaching at the downtown campus,” said Stanley.
The addition was called for after the YMCA began running out of room. The downtown campus, which offered memberships to students, has been growing quickly.
