Shepherds are shaping up. Sales of doggie treadmills are on the move.
In fact, three millions dogs in the U.S. used treadmills in 2010, according to a survey by the American Pet Products Association.
Valley dog trainer Sam Basso said that treadmills are a great option for pet parents.
“They’re an alternate way for someone to exercise their dog where possibly they might not be able to do it, such as in Phoenix where it’s 115 degrees,” Basso said.
Basso said that any form of exercise is beneficial to a pet. It helps reduce stress, can help with behavioral issues and keeps them healthy.
He also said he does have some concerns about using treadmills.
“Potential exists for a dog to get hurt because someone is not watching what’s going on with their dog,” Basso said.
Treadmills designed for a pet have added safety features to decrease the risk of injury.
Also, expect to pay quite a bit. They start at about $500.
