Energy demand record broken during high temps

Nearly one million SRP customers cranked up the air conditioning on Wednesday during the record-breaking 116 degree heat.
SRP spokesman Jeff Lane said the demand for power was so high that it set an all-time record for energy consumption.
“A typical summer day like this, when the temperatures are high, Valley residents use more electricity…than New York City does,” he said.
Lane said that SRP has more customers than it ever has before, which also helped contribute to the record.
The old demand record was set in 2006.
Lane said people can help save energy by turning the thermostat up a degree or two and adding shades or blinds to windows to keep their house as cool as possible.
