A 2-year-old boy was killed in south Phoenix on Wednesday after being run over by his 14-year-old uncle in a family vehicle, police said.
“So he’s playing with the children in the area on the side of the home,” said Phoenix Police Officer John Holmes. “There’s a van, that’s parked in the area. He realizes that he doesn’t have enough room for the kids to play, so he gets inside the van, he starts it and he backs it up.”
When the van began to backup, the uncle knew something wasn’t right.
“He realized that something was wrong,” said Holmes. “He had hit the child. He went out, he grabbed that child and he ran to the grandmother. Of course, 911 was called.”
The boy was transported to a local hospital, where he died.
Holmes called the situation that unfolded near 27th St. and Southern a tragic accident.
