Census shows Phoenix-area continues to draw new residents

More and more people are calling Phoenix home.
Maricopa County, led by Phoenix as the county seat and Arizona capital, is among the top counties in the country seeing an influx of new residents.
According to recently released data from the U.S. Census and the Internal Revenue Service, Maricopa County — with 77,046 new tax returns filed between 2012 and 2013 — ranked fourth among the top 10 counties with the biggest population gains.
Los Angeles County in California was first in population gains during the same time period, with 123,779 new tax returns filed. Harris County, Texas, which boasts Houston among its metropolitan areas was second, followed by Chicago’s home turf of Cook County in third.
Livability.com is quick to point out, however, that the numbers are not really that impactful given that the top-tier counties on the list are already among the most densely-populated counties in the United States.
There has been an overall shift in population from the Northeast and Midwest to places like Texas, Arizona and California in the Southwest. The shift comes as Baby Boomers look outside of traditional retirement areas, such as Florida, to settle down.
With people moving in, there were also people moving out. And Maricopa County was again among the top 10.
Ranking seventh on the IRS Migration list, Maricopa County also saw 69,460 people exit the Valley between 2012 and 2013.
Los Angeles County was again at the top of the “moving out” list, followed by Cook County, Illinois, Harris County, Texas, New York County and Miami-Dade County, Florida.
