PHOENIX — Arizona was forced to pay $98,000 after Gov. Jan Brewer canceled
a 2010 conference between governors of U.S. border states and their Mexican
counterparts.
The Arizona Republic said it obtained records showing
the governor’s staff negotiated “cancellation damages” for the event, which
was to take place at the Arizona Biltmore hotel.
The conference was cut after Mexican governors refused to attend because of the
passing of Arizona’s immigration law, which the U.S. Supreme Court partially upheld Monday.
The Governor’s Office paid a management company to pay the $98,000 bill but the
Biltmore only received a portion of the money.
An attorney for the hotel said the issue has been resolved.
Brewer’s office, the state Attorney General’s Office and the management company
did not immediately return calls for comment.
