Hispanic leaders: 1070 ruling doesn’t resolve issue

The recent ruling by the Supreme Court on SB 1070 does nothing to resolve the critical matter of how to best address the immigration problem, said the Arizona Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
James Garcia, director of strategic communication and policy for the chamber, said parts of law, upheld by the justices, creates a negative image for the state.
“It does make some people decide to not come here, not want to be here because they don’t want to be harassed,” he said.
In a statement, the chamber said that it respects the justices’ decision, but the ruling “fails to resolve the critical and pressing matter of how to best regulate and maintain an appropriate degree of immigration into the United States, including issues involving our nation’s unquestionable need for a ready pool of labor at every level of the U.S. economy.”
“Fundamentally, we need immigrants,” said Garcia. “We need immigration and we need a healthy flow of that, otherwise, our economy will not succeed.”
