Pima County wins grant to kill buffelgrass

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Tucson International Airport is getting federal
assistance in its goal of weeding out buffelgrass.
The Arizona Daily Star reports Pima County has been
awarded a $2.5 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to help rid
the area around the airport of the invasive perennial grass.
Lindy Brigham, director of the Southern Arizona Buffelgrass Coordination
Center, said Thursday the airport is on a high-priority list for fighting
buffelgrass.
Brigham says the grass is a major fire hazard and can spread its seed, even
after being cut. She says only a spraying can cause the buffelgrass to die and
break down over a few years.
The county and airport will also chip in funding for a contractor to spray
about 500 acres.
