Arizona midwives want overhaul of state regulations

PHOENIX — Arizona health officials are overhauling the licensing and
standard of care for midwives and their clients.
The Arizona Republic reported the Arizona Department of
Health Services is setting up an advisory committee in the wake of the passing
of a legislative bill requiring regulations for midwives be updated.
The department, which is accepting applications, said the committee will
include midwives, clients and physicians.
Current state rules prohibit women who have had cesarean sections, whose babies are
breach and women pregnant with multiples from having home births.
Some midwives are also calling for changes to the licensing process as well as
allowing a national licensing organization to oversee training.
There are 64 licensed midwives in Arizona.
