Arizona school-data system will get upgrade

PHOENIX — Arizona’s school data system is getting an upgrade with money
from the federal government.
The Arizona Republic reported a $5 million grant, along
with funds from the state Legislature, will go toward replacing the state’s
tracking system of student test scores and enrollment within public schools.
State Superintendent John Huppenthal said Monday the Student Accountability
Information System is overburdened and outdated in tracking an estimated 1
million students.
The new system will eventually let the state link individual student test
scores to teachers.
Huppenthal said the grant and the $6.6 million in state money would provide a
fraction of the cost. The education department is seeking money from other
sources.
Officials said Arizona is one of 24 states receiving funding to improve its data
systems.
