Group opposes Arizona’s voter registration rule

PHOENIX – A group has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to reject Arizona’s
request to let its requirement that people prove their citizenship in
registering to vote remain in effect during the current election cycle.
The Mexican-American Legal Defense and Education Fund asked the nation’s
highest court on Monday to reject Arizona’s request to keep the requirement in
effect while it appeals a decision by the 9th Circuit Court Appeals that
concluded that federal election law trumps the state’s registration requirement.
Last week, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy agreed to let the
requirement remain in effect until further notice.
The state’s lawyers say the requirement should remain because there’s a
reasonable probability that the court will agree to hear its appeal and reverse
the lower court’s decision.
