Red Cross blood donations are down in Arizona

PHOENIX — Summer is usually the toughest time of year for the American Red Cross to get blood donations, but this year it hasn’t been limited to one season.
“Our donations for the first five months of 2012 have been way down compared to the same time frame a year ago,” said Debra Deininger with the American Red Cross.
“Consequently, this mean we have half the amount of blood in the Red Cross inventory that we would normally have this time of year.”
There is a shortage for most blood types, particularly for the more in-demand blood types O-positive and O-negative.
The Red Cross is holding a blood drive Thursday at 6135 N. Black Canyon Highway, Phoenix, near Bethany Home Road and Interstate 17.
