Phoenix Fire urges people take extra care to avoid locking kids, pets in cars

With the heat rising, the Phoenix Fire Department is reminding parents to be on high alert to prevent locking their kids and pets in cars.
Phoenix Fire Capt. Jorge Enriquez said so far this year, firefighters have helped nearly 350 people who were locked in vehicles.
“By the time we get the call, from the station to the call it’s an average of four minutes,” he said. “By the time we evaluate the situation — if the car is not on and the kid is sweating and looks in distress — we’re going to break the window right away and get in there as fast as we can.”
Enriquez said the inside of cars can reach 140 degrees when it’s 100 degrees outside.
