Peoria Police are looking for a suspect who impersonated a police officer, then robbed a man.
According to police, the suspect recently approached a man at community mailboxes near Northern and 87th avenues, identifying himself as an off-duty officer. He did not show a badge and wasn’t wearing a uniform or driving a police vehicle.
He informed the victim, 56, that the man had nearly run over someone and asked for his license, registration and proof of insurance. He proceeded to pat down the man, taking his wallet.
The suspect, who was wearing sunglasses and a hat, took off in a red, four-door Dodge pickup truck.
He tried to use the victim’s credit/debit cards at several convenience stores. Store video-surveillance footage did not capture a clear shot of the man, described as Hispanic, 5-9 or 5-10, in his late 30s.
