NEEDLES, Calif. – The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department is
planning a campaign against boating under the influence on the Colorado River.
The department says officers will be on the lookout June 22-24 for boat
operators whose blood-alcohol content exceeds the state limit of .08 percent.
The enforcement action will take place at Needles, Parker Dam and Lake Havasu.
It’s part of an annual nationwide campaign called Operation Dry Water.
The Sheriff’s Department notes that the Coast Guard reported recreational
boating fatalities last year jumped to their highest level since 1998. Alcohol
was a contributing factor in 6 percent of boating accidents overall, but figured
in 16 percent of boating fatalities in the U.S.
The department patrols 90 miles of the Colorado River.
