Phoenix police are on the scene of a shooting near 91st Avenue and Lower Buckeye.
Phoenix Police Sgt. Trent Crump said the man broke into the home of an off-duty Tolleson Police Officer, who shot and critically wounded the young man after he used a rock to break into the home.
“He turned towards the homeowner with that rock, at which time the homeowner fired one round, struck the subject in the head and the subject went down,” he said.
Crump said the intruder is between the ages of 17 and 21. He was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.
The off-duty officer has been on the force for less than four years.
Police are still investigating.
