FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Off-road vehicle identification laws in three states
are being highlighted by a group pushing for a uniform way to spot illegal
riders.
Responsible Trails America released its second annual report Tuesday on the
states’ requirements. It highlights Arizona, Nevada and Wisconsin for requiring
large license plates or decals with contrasting colors and a minimum font size
that are easy for authorities to see.
The group says adoption of a model like those states also would help private
property owners in rural areas deter trespassers when law enforcement isn’t
nearby.
The report shows that vehicle identification requirements vary across the
country.
Twelve states mandate large, visible plates or decals with a minimum font size.
Other states’ laws don’t address the size of fonts or decals. Fourteen states
have no identification requirements.
