Hazmat situation closes Scottsdale rehab center

Jun 5, 2012, 4:10 PM

A hazmat situation forced the evacuation of Scottsdale Training and Rehabilitation
Services
near 75th Street and Osborn Road on Tuesday.

Three people were sent to the hospital after close to
30 people were complaining of headaches. The initial
readings in the building indicated high levels of carbon
monoxide.

The source was determined to be an open pipe coming from an underground vault. It was temporarily closed by fire crews. The organization will have to fix the leak permanently before allowing people into the building.

In all, 73 people have been evacuated to a stadium.

“One of our locations in our city that we do have set-up for evacuations, being that it’s right across the street from Scottsdale Osborn Hospital,” said Ford. “We have excellent medical care real close, we have the transportation units from PMT, we have all the resources from the auto-aid form the fire that are here, so people here are getting very good care and are in very good shape at this point.”

For those heading to a doctor seeking treatment, Scottsdale Police Officer David Pubins said to call their respective healthcare providers ahead of time.

There were traffic restrictions in the area. Osborn Road was
closed in both directions at Miller Road. Those restrictions were lifted around 3:30 p.m.

People with appointments near the area were advised to call
ahead to get the latest update.

46 units responded to the call and about 150 firefighters were on the scene.
