Arizona cities start June with record heat

PHOENIX — Arizona has started the month of June with record
temperatures in Phoenix and Tucson and excessive heat warnings for the
northwestern edge of the state.
The National Weather Service says temperatures reached 111 degrees Friday
in Phoenix, making it the hottest June 1 that the city has seen since 1977.
In Tucson, Friday’s high of 107 degrees broke a record that had been set in
2005. Forecasters say the record comes on the heels of the city’s seventh-
warmest May on record.
More near-record temperatures are in store for parts of Arizona through the
weekend as other states also deal with blistering temperatures.
Forecasters have issued a heat warning for northwestern Arizona, portions of
southern Nevada and southeast California. They say temperature records are
also expected to be broken Saturday in central and western New Mexico.
