PHOENIX – The city of Phoenix is preparing to reopen its community
swimming pools for the busy summer season.
The Arizona Republic reports city officials say the attendance of swimmers
since Memorial Day weekend, considered the beginning of the season, has been
lower than expected.
Officials say all but one of the city’s 29 pools opened simultaneously for the
first time since 2008.
Recent budget cuts had at least eight pools closed on a rotating business.
Officials say more than 10,000 visitors went to pools during the holiday
weekend. But they say the average number of visitors per pool was lower than
last year.
City pool staffers hope the expected high temperatures this weekend will spur
regular swimmers to dive in.
The swimming pools will open until July 29.
