PAGE, Ariz. – Authorities have recovered the body of an Arizona teenager
who got caught in the undertow of a water gate in the Lake Mead National
Recreational Area.
The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office said Friday that heavy equipment was brought
in from a hardware store in neighboring Nevada to create a temporary dam. That
enabled authorities to recover the body of 14-year-old Alma Rosa Lujan.
The girl lived in the northwest Arizona community of Scenic.
Authorities say Lujan was swimming with friends in the Virgin River of the Lake
Mead area on Thursday. She got wedged into a small water current that led to the
other side of the dam.
The Beaver Dam Fire Department tried to rescue Lujan, but were unsuccessful
because of the strong undertow.
