TUCSON, Ariz. — More than half of early ballots given out in the race to
represent southeastern Arizona’s 8th Congressional District have been returned.
The Arizona Daily Star reported that 116,039 early
ballots were turned in Wednesday, just two weeks before election day.
Pima County Recorder F. Ann Rodriguez said the pace at which 52 percent of the
ballots have been returned is “staggering.”
The ballots came from all four counties that include parts of the district.
The candidates vying to complete Rep. Gabrielle Giffords’ term include Democrat
Ron Barber, Republican Jesse Kelly and Green Party candidate Charlie Manolakis.
The election is June 12.
Giffords stepped down to continue her recovery from being shot in the head at a
meet-and-greet event with constituents in January 2011.
