Former Mountain Shadows resort to be homes, hotel, businesses

Paradise Valley’s once-shuttered Mountain Shadows resort is getting a major makeover.
Construction is under way to redevelop the area left blighted by boarded-up buildings for a decade after the Marriott-owned property closed its doors in 2004.
In addition to the construction of a new boutique hotel that aims to capitalize on the natural aesthetics of the surrounding Camelback Mountain, developer Cullum Homes, which bought up land in the area last year, is building dozens of luxury homes, reportedly priced to sell between $2 million and $6.5 million.
The community will be known as the Village at Mountain Shadows and, according to Cullum — with some extra costs — some of the custom-built homes will include swanky innovative design features such as the “car bar” elevator option.
This feature will allow homeowners to put favorites from an automobile collection on a display platform that lowers into their basements behind glass walls.
Model homes for The Village at Mountain Shadows are expected to open this fall, while the first residents of the exclusive 40-home community are expected to begin moving in sometime in 2016.
Nearby facilities will include the new Mountain Shadows Golf resort hotel, which will be built by development partners Westroc Hospitality and Woodbine Development.
The resort will include 180 rooms and 31 condominium units, as well as a newly-restored golf course. It will be the first new-build hotel property in Paradise Valley in seven years.
Plans also call for the building of a new complex to house a restaurant, coffee shop and specialty grocery store in the area. The hotel, golf course and restaurant complex are all scheduled to open in 2017.
Mountain Shadows resort first opened in 1959 and soon became one of the Phoenix-area’s premier resort destinations before it closed more than ten years ago.
The hotel was demolished in 2014 after changing ownership hands, paving the way for the new development now in progress.
