Children of fallen Phoenix officer get surprise school greeting from police

The first day of school is always special, but for two suburban Phoenix children, Monday was extraordinary.
Kaylee and Kody Murphy were greeted at Peoria Terramar Elementary School by dozens of Phoenix police officers and firefighters from Peoria, Glendale and Phoenix, to honor the memory of their father, Travis Murphy, a policeman killed in the line of the duty.
Second-grader Kaylee, 7, and kindergartner Kody, 5, had no idea what was waiting for them, said their mother, Danielle Murphy. Her husband was shot and killed five years ago.
“Who are all these people, do they know Daddy?” the kids asked. Their mother told them yes, “they’re all Daddy’s friends.”

The officers and firefighters passed out mini plastic discs and pencils to many of the children at the school at 70th Avenue and Happy Valley Road.
Phoenix police provided a similar school welcome for the daughter of Officer Daryl Raetz, who died on the job in 2013.
