A 4-year-old girl was killed Friday night near the Cave Creek exit ramp on the westbound Loop 101 as a result of a rear end collision.
The accident, which involved two other vehicles also sent two people to the hospital in stable condition. Three other individuals were evaluated at the scene, but were not transported.
The incident caused the westbound lanes of the freeway and the off-ramp to be shut down just after 8 p.m.
Arizona Department of Public Safety said the girl was bucked in a car seat at the time of the collision. DPS is still investigating to determine the cause of the accident.
The accident was just one of two incidents that caused traffic headaches for motorists on the Loop 101 Friday.
A second unrelated accident occurred on Cave Creek Road north of the 101 when a vehicle collided with a horse trailer. It is believed six horses were aboard the trailer at the time of the accident, though no injuries to the horses or vehicle passengers were reported. The horses received medical evaluation by a local equestrian veterinarian.
