A suspect died Wednesday after opening fire inside a Nashville, Tenn., movie theater, police said.

Police said the shooter was also armed with a hatchet and carrying backpacks. The bags are being investigated.

Don Aaron, a spokesman for Metro Nashville police, said an officer came into the theater and was fired upon by the suspect. The officer shot back, then backed off. After that, a SWAT team came in, and there was another exchange of gunfire. The suspect was then found dead.

WSMV-TV reported shots were fired inside the Carmike Hickory 8 theaters about 11:15 a.m. Arizona time during a showing of “Mad Max: Fury Road.” The theater is located in Antioch, a suburb located about 10 miles from downtown Nashville.

Three emergency units were sent to the scene and witnesses said one bloodied person was seen. Fire department spokesman Brian Haas said three people were treated for exposure to pepper spray, and one of those people had a superficial wound that could have been caused by a hatchet. No one was taken to a hospital.

The theater is close to a mall and ice rink.

Late last month, 58-year-old John Russell Houser opened fire inside a Lafayettte, La., theater, killing two people and injuring nine others before taking his own life.
