PHOENIX — State Route 67 to Grand Canyon National Park’s North Rim will be closing for the winter on Monday, the Arizona Department of Transportation announced Friday.
ADOT closes the 43-mile stretch each winter due to the heavy snowfall the region receives. In a typical year, more than 9 feet of snow covers the area.
US 89A will stay open at the junction with SR 67 in Jacob Lake.
State Route 67 is expected to reopen May 2025.
ADOT provided the following tips when driving during the winter:
-
Slow down: Drive defensively. Be patient and allow additional time for your trip.
-
Respect the plow: Give snow plows plenty of room to work.
-
Prepare: Pack a car safety kit that includes a fully charged cellphone, warm clothings, snacks, water and other items listed at azdot.gov/KnowSnow.
-
Gas up: Have plenty of fuel so you can stay warm in case of an emergency.
-
Think: If a travel app suggests taking an unpaved road, your settings may be off. Don’t risk getting stuck in a remote area.
-
Research: Check weather and road conditions before you leave. Let someone know your route.
