PHOENIX — This year’s Arizona Capitol Christmas tree is a majestic Ponderosa pine gifted to the state by the San Carlos Apache Tribe.

“We are honored to receive a tree from a tribal nation for the second year in a row. As we deepen relationships with tribal communities, this tree celebrates the vibrant cultures that make Arizona so special,” Gov. Katie Hobbs said in a press release Monday, three days after the tree was harvested and transported to Phoenix.

The tribe and the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management selected the tree from the Point of Pines area northeast of Globe.

How tall is Arizona Capitol Christmas tree?

The towering pine, which was 40 feet tall when harvested, was cut down to 20 feet to fit within the Capitol rotunda in downtown Phoenix.

The Arizona Capitol Christmas tree has been decorated and put on display. A lighting ceremony will be held at 9 a.m. Monday.

The San Carlos Apache Reservation is home to one of the world’s largest contiguous stands of Ponderosa pine trees. The evergreen conifer thrives in Arizona at elevations above 5,000 feet.

“We know this tree will be used to spread holiday warmth and cheer, and it is our hope that it will further serve as a reminder of the natural beauty that exists within our great state and the deep roots the San Carlos Apache have in this region,” Terry Rambler, chairman of the tribe, said in the release.
