PHOENIX — An Arizona man was sentenced to 22 years in prison for sexually abusing a 4-year-old, authorities announced on Tuesday.

Ty O’Brien Shorty, 33, pleaded guilty to abusive sexual contact of a child on May 16, the U.S Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona said.

Shorty is from Chinle, a Navajo Nation community with a population of about 4,500 in the northeastern part of the state.

He abused the child on July 23, 2023, leaving the victim hospitalized with severe injuries, according to prosecutors.

The prison sentence will be followed by supervised release for the rest of Shorty’s life.

The FBI worked the case with the Navajo Nation Division of Public Safety.
