PHOENIX — Traffic in the area of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport could be slowed by multiple nearby freeway closures this weekend.
Stretches of Interstate 10, Loop 202 and State Route 143 (Hohokam Expressway) surrounding the airport are among the construction zones to watch in the coming days, per the Arizona Department of Transportation Weekend Freeway Travel Advisory for Nov. 8-11. (Note: All times below are subject to change.)
And while there is no construction planned for the West Valley, motorists can expect delays due to the weekend NASCAR events at Phoenix Raceway in Avondale and the Arizona Cardinals game at State Farm Stadium in Glendale on Sunday afternoon.

The most significant closure will be on I-10 for work on the Broadway Curve Improvement Project west and south of Sky Harbor.
Eastbound I-10 and associated ramps will be closed from the SR 51 “Mini-Stack” interchange in Phoenix all the way to US 60 (Superstition Freeway) in Tempe from 10 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday.
Motorists heading to the East Valley from central Phoenix can get through the area by taking the eastbound Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway to the southbound Loop 101 Price Freeway to connect with US 60 or the Loop 202 Santan Freeway.
Traffic from the West Valley can bypass the closure via the southbound/eastbound Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway, which reconnects with I-10 in the Chandler/Ahwatukee area.
Come Monday morning, a new collector-distributor (CD) road will be open for vehicles entering eastbound I-10 from southbound SR 143 and Broadway Road. The westbound Broadway Curve CD road opened in August.
What other freeway closures might impact airport traffic?
Meanwhile, north of Sky Harbor, the westbound Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway will be closed from Priest Drive in Tempe to the I-10/SR 51 “Mini-Stack” interchange in Phoenix from 11:30 p.m. Saturday to 6 p.m. Sunday for pavement sealing.
The westbound 202 ramp that leads to Sky Harbor Boulevard and SR 143 will remain open, providing a detour route with airport access.
However, SR 143 northeast of the airport will be closed in both directions for maintenance between McDowell Road and Van Buren Street from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday.
The following ramps in the area will be off-limits at the same time, except where noted:
- Eastbound Loop 202 to northbound SR 143/McDowell Road.
- Eastbound Loop 202 to southbound SR 143 (reopens at noon Saturday).
- Southbound SR 143 to westbound Loop 202.
Where else will construction impact traffic this weekend?
- Northbound I-17 will be closed from Dunlap Avenue to Peoria Avenue in Phoenix from 10 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday for work on a light rail bridge over the freeway.
- The off-ramps from both directions of SR 51 to Bethany Home Road will be closed from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for utility work.
