PHOENIX – An unborn child failed to survive a weekend domestic violence incident in northern Arizona, authorities said Wednesday.

Deputies responded to a Prescott-area home on Sunday and learned that a man allegedly threw his wife to the ground, according to the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office.

The woman, who was 6-8 weeks pregnant, sustained trauma to her abdomen but refused medical attention at the scene.

She later admitted herself to a hospital and learned the unborn child, which showed signs of viability a few days earlier, hadn’t survived, YCSO said.

Husband in domestic violence case faces multiple charges

The husband, whose name was not released, was initially booked into jail for assault.

As a result of information learned during the investigation, prosecutors added an attempted homicide charge.

More charges could be filed as the domestic violence investigation continues, YCSO said.

“The Sheriff’s Office would like to extend condolences to the woman who lost her child,” Sheriff David Rhodes said in a press release. “I am always grateful to the men and women of the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office who always fight to protect the most vulnerable among us and by holding violent perpetrators accountable.”

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Victims can receive support 24/7 by calling the national hotline at 800-799-SAFE (7233) or texting 88788.
