PHOENIX — The weekend before Halloween might be a little scary for metro Phoenix drivers.

That’s because weekend closures are scheduled for five stretches of the Valley freeway system.

In addition, several other areas will be impeded by lane restrictions, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) Weekend Freeway Travel Advisory for Oct. 25-28. (All times below are subject to change.)

Broadway Curve work continues to disrupt I-10 traffic

Travelers heading from Phoenix to the East Valley will have to avoid a closure on Interstate 10 related to a Broadway Curve Improvement Project traffic shift.

When the freeway reopens Monday, the split lane configuration from 24th Street to 32nd Street will be removed.

But first, eastbound I-10 will closed from the State Route 51 “Mini-Stack” interchange in Phoenix to US 60 (Superstition Freeway) in Tempe from 10 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday.

Multiple freeway ramps will be off-limits across the construction zone, too.

In addition, northbound 48th Street/SR 143 will closed from Broadway Road to University Drive and southbound 40th Street will be off-limits from I-10 to Broadway Road from 8 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday.

Drivers can get around the closure by taking the eastbound Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway to the southbound Loop 101 Price Freeway to westbound US 60 to reconnect with I-10.

Motorists coming from the West Valley should consider taking the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway in Phoenix south and east to reach I-10 in the Chandler/Ahwatukee area, ADOT said.

Two weekend closures scheduled for Loop 101

Meanwhile, the Loop 101 will have two weekend closures on opposite sides of the Valley.

On the west side, the westbound Loop 101 Agua Fria Freeway will be closed from 19th Avenue to 51st Avenue from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for an ongoing widening project. The I-17 ramps to westbound Loop 101 and the westbound Loop 101 on-ramps at Seventh Street and Seventh Avenue will be off-limits, too.

Drivers who exit at 19th Avenue can take the Loop 101 frontage road along the length of the closure. Another detour option is to exit the freeway before the closure and use westbound Union Hills Drive or Bell Road.

On the east side, the southbound Loop 101 Pima Freeway will be closed from Pima Road/Princess Drive to Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for bridge work. Motorists can detour via the Loop 101 frontage road.

What are the other weekend closures on Valley freeways?

Drivers also have to watch out for weekend closures on two freeways in Phoenix.

First, southbound SR 51 will be closed from the Loop 101 Pima Freeway to the I-10/Loop 202 “Mini-Stack” from 9 p.m. Friday to 9 p.m. Saturday for pavement sealing.

Next, southbound I-17 will be closed from Peoria Avenue to Indian School Road from 9 p.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday for pavement sealing.

Crews will reopen sections of SR 51 and I-17 as the work progresses, ADOT said.

More construction zones to watch

In addition to the freeway closures, the following lane restrictions could delay traffic in the coming days:

  • Southbound I-17 will be reduced to one lane from State Route 74/Carefree Highway to Loop 303 for pavement improvements from 9 p.m. Friday to 9 a.m. Saturday, from 9 p.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday and from 9 p.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday. In addition, the southbound I-17 on-ramp at Dove Valley Road and the off-ramp at Loop 303 will also be closed at times during the weekend.
  • Northbound I-17 will be restricted to one lane from Loop 303 to SR 74/Carefree Highway overnight Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. for pavement improvements.
  • The westbound Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway will be limited to one lane from Priest Drive to 40th Street from 9 p.m. Sunday to 4 a.m. Monday for maintenance.
  • Grand Avenue/US 60 will be narrowed to one lane each way in areas between R.H. Johnson Boulevard and Deer Valley Road for construction from 8 p.m. Friday to 9 a.m. Saturday, from 8 p.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday and from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday, Monday and Tuesday nights.
