PHOENIX — Motorists should plan ahead for detours and delays due to multiple freeway closures across metro Phoenix this weekend.

Traffic along the Interstate 10 Broadway Curve, I-17 in central and north Phoenix and Loop 101 in Scottsdale and the West Valley will all be impacted by roadwork, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) Weekend Freeway Travel Advisory for Oct. 18-21. (All times noted below are subject to change.)

In the heart of the Valley, westbound I-10 will be closed from US 60 (Superstition Freeway) in Tempe to the I-17 “Split” interchange near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport from 10 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday for Broadway Curve Improvement Project work.

The ramps from westbound US 60 and southbound State Route 143 to westbound I-10 will be closed at the same time.

Additionally, the following ramps will be out of commission for the weekend starting at 8 p.m. Friday:

  • Elliot, Baseline and Broadway roads and 40th and 32nd streets to westbound I-10.
  • McClintock Drive, Rural Road and Mill Avenue to westbound US 60.

ADOT suggests taking the Loop 202 Santan Freeway or US 60 east to the northbound Loop 101 Price Freeway and westbound Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway to access southbound SR 143 and points west.

If you are heading toward the West Valley, consider taking the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway west and north to reconnect with I-10 near 59th Avenue.

When will there be freeway closures on I-17?

Meanwhile, pavement sealing work will close parts of I-17 in Phoenix over the weekend, with a different direction affected each night. Crews will reopen sections of the freeway as the work progresses.

First, southbound I-17 will be closed from Peoria Avenue to Seventh Avenue from 9 p.m. Friday to 2 p.m. Saturday, along with the I-10 ramps to southbound I-17 at the “Stack” interchange.

The following night, northbound I-17 will be closed from the I-10 “Split” interchange to Peoria Avenue from 9 p.m. Saturday to 2 p.m. Sunday.

What other freeway closures are scheduled this weekend?

Two projects on different sections of Loop 101 will require freeway closures this weekend.

In Scottsdale, the Loop 101 Pima Freeway will be closed from Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard to Pima Road/Princess Drive from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for bridge work. The northbound Loop 101 on-ramps at Cactus Road and Raintree Drive will also be off-limits.

Traffic can detour along the northbound Loop 101 frontage road during the Scottsdale closure.

In the West Valley, the eastbound Loop 101 Agua Fria Freeway will be closed from 51st Avenue to 19th Avenue from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for a widening project. The ramps from 75th, 67th and 59th avenues to eastbound Loop 101 will be out of commission, too.

Motorists who exit before reaching 51st Avenue can take Union Hills Drive or Bell Road east to bypass the closure. Those who stay on the Loop 101 until the freeway closes can detour along the Beardsley frontage road.

Overnight restrictions in north Phoenix

Lastly, drivers heading north out of the Valley this weekend should plan for nighttime and morning delays due to pavement improvement work on I-17.

Northbound I-17 will be reduced to one lane from Happy Valley Road to Loop 303 in north Phoenix from 9 p.m. Friday to 9 a.m. Saturday, from 9 p.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday and from 9 p.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday.

Motorists should allow for extra time if traveling while the freeway is restricted.

We want to hear from you.
