PHOENIX — Ruben Gallego said Wednesday that claims that he wants to keep his divorce file sealed to avoid potential issues with his campaign are untrue and instead wants to do so for the privacy of his son.

Gallego told KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Outspoken with Bruce and Gaydos that he wants to protect his son, Michael. Ruben Gallego and Kate Gallego, who is Phoenix’s mayor, divorced in 2016 after six years of marriage as she was pregnant with their son.

Gallego’s U.S. Senate opponent, Kari Lake, told Broomhead Show on Wednesday that he doesn’t want the file released because they “have some damning information about him in there.”

“We have a son who did not choose to run for office but we need to protect him and his privacy and that’s all we’ve been asking this whole time,” Gallego said. “Kari Lake and her allies know that because the judge told them there’s nothing there and yet they continue to attack and of course we’re worried.”

Gallego has asked the Arizona Supreme Court to keep the file sealed, saying the conservative news outlet that has asked to unseal it is doing so for “political motivations.”

Lake, who is not involved in the case, said she doesn’t believe in the motivations of Gallego, who has since remarried.

“We don’t know the truth about Ruben,” Lake said.

Ruben Gallego not Lake’s first target

Gallego is not the first politician in the crosshairs of Lake.

The Republican candidate has gone after John McCain and his family, Maricopa County Recorder Stephen Richer and others since entering the political field.

A defamation lawsuit Richer brought against Lake is in its final stages after Lake requested a default judgement, meaning her lawyers asked a judge to jump directly to the damages phase of the lawsuit.

“This is who we’re trying to protect our son from because she will do anything,” Gallego said. “She will say anything and she will hurt anybody just to get power.”
