PHOENIX — From Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump campaigning in Prescott Valley to a 20-day record daily heat streak in Phoenix, here are the Valley’s top news stories from Oct. 11-13.


Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump focuses on border, economy at rally in Prescott Valley

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump turned his focus to the border and the economy at his rally in Prescott Valley on Sunday.

In his fourth visit to Arizona this year, Trump again emphasized securing the border during his 95-minute-long speech ahead of the Nov. 5 general election.

With early voting in Arizona already taking place, Trump also took plenty of jabs at President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris on Sunday.


Record daily heat streak in Phoenix reaches 20 days

Phoenix’s daily heat streak record reached 20 days after another mark fell on Sunday.

The thermometer at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which the National Weather Service (NWS) uses for the city’s official records, hit 102 degrees at 2:25 p.m. The previous record of 101 degrees was set in 1989.

Phoenix has broken daily heat records 18 times and tied two more since the streak began on Sept. 24.


Rock star Sammy Hagar sells rare Ferrari at Scottsdale Barrett-Jackson auction for record price

Rock star Sammy Hagar sold his one-of-a-kind 2015 Ferrari LaFerrari for a record price on Saturday during the Barrett-Jackson 2024 fall auction in Scottsdale.

The former Van Halen frontman flew into Scottsdale for the event which saw his vehicle sell for $4.675 million. The former high mark for a 2015 Ferrari LaFerrari was $3.9 million in August 2022 at Broad Arrow Group Auctions at the Monterey Jet Center in California.

Hagar planned to sell his unique car last January at the 2024 Barrett-Jackson collector car auction in Scottsdale, however, he waited to sell in order to have a high-voltage lithium-ion battery installed.


New Safeway store set to open in Peoria on Oct. 18

A new Safeway supermarket is scheduled to open in Peoria near the end of next week.

The store, located on the northwest corner of 83rd Avenue and Happy Valley Road, will open its doors on Friday, Oct. 18 at 6 a.m.

It features a full-service pharmacy, expanded Starbucks and seating area, designer floral department, an expansive wine and craft beer area and a full-service sushi counter.


Hot dog! Scottsdale firefighters work for 7 hours to rescue dog trapped in house

A technical rescue team with the Scottsdale Fire Department worked on Tuesday night to save a trapped canine.

Scottsdale Fire received the family’s call for help around 7 p.m.

The 14-person team that took on the job worked to save the Scottsdale dog from where she’d become trapped in her home until 2 a.m. Wednesday.
