The city of Maricopa, located just south of Phoenix, has until now been mostly known as an agricultural community. That’s about to change.
One of Pinal County’s largest cities, with a population of 75,000, is set for an economic boost with a handful of major projects in the pipeline around its major freeways and rail line.
To place Maricopa on the economic development map, the municipality has been working overtime to plan new innovation and industrial corridors, while also increasing multifamily and retail development in the city, one of the fastest growing in the U.S.
Similar to fast-growing West Valley cities like Buckeye and Peoria, the city wants to see its residents stay in Maricopa, which comprises 250 square miles of planning area and is expected to exceed 1 million in population when fully built out.
“You’re seeing a lot of those folks that have traditionally traveled into the Phoenix metro area wanting to stay here to live, work and play,” said Christian Price, chief economic development officer for the city of Maricopa.
