PHOENIX — Interstate 10 traffic will have to detour around two long construction zones during a busy weekend of Valley freeway closures and restrictions.
Parts of the Loop 101 Agua Fria Freeway and State Route 143 will also be closed, and several other areas will be disrupted by roadwork, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) Weekend Freeway Travel Advisory for Oct. 4-7. (All times noted below are subject to change.)
There will be one closure of I-10 in each direction. The westbound lanes will be closed from the I-17 “Split” interchange near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport to the I-10 “Stack” interchange west of 19th Avenue from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for paving and signage work. The southbound State Route 51 ramp to westbound I-10 and other ramps in the area will be off-limits, too.
Westbound traffic can bypass the closure by taking I-17 at the “Split” and reconnecting with I-10 at the “Stack.”
The eastbound closure spans from the US 60 (Superstition Freeway) in Tempe down to Ray Road in the Ahwatukee/Chandler area from 10 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday for Broadway Curve Improvement Project work. The eastbound US 60 off- and on-ramps at Mill Avenue and other area ramps will also be out of commission.
To avoid this closure, motorists can head east on the Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway or US 60 and take the southbound Loop 101 Price Freeway to the westbound Loop 202 Santan Freeway to get back to I-10. Eastbound traffic coming from the West Valley should consider traveling south and east on the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway to reach the Chandler/Ahwatukee area, ADOT said.
What are the other Valley freeway closures this weekend
In another detour related to the Broadway Curve project, Southbound SR 143 (Hohokam Expressway) will be closed east of the airport from the Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway to I-10 from 10 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday. This closure includes the westbound Loop 202 ramp to Sky Harbor Boulevard.

Motorists can take southbound 44th Street to reach Sky Harbor while SR 143 is off-limits.
Over in the West Valley, the westbound Loop 101 Agua Fria Freeway will be closed from 51st Avenue to 75th Avenue from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for work on a widening project.
The westbound Loop 101 Beardsley frontage road is a detour option, but it will be limited to one lane. Traffic can also get through the area via Union Hills Drive or Bell Road, ADOT said.
More construction zones to watch
In addition to the above Valley freeway closures, drivers should be prepared for disruptions and delays in the following areas:
- Southbound I-17 from State Route 74/Carefree Highway to Dixileta Drive in north Phoenix: Traffic will be reduced to one lane nightly from 9 p.m. Friday to 9 a.m. Saturday, from 9 p.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday and from 9 p.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday for pavement improvements. Motorists who experience delays should stay on I-17 and avoid using surface streets, regardless of what mapping apps suggest, ADOT said.
- Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard at the Loop 101 Pima Freeway in Scottsdale: Both directions of Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard will be blocked at the freeway from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for bridge work. Motorists can use frontage roads and nearby cross streets as a detour.
- Loop 202 Santan Freeway at Lindsay Road in Gilbert: Both directions of the Loop 202 will be limited to two lanes from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for a widening project, and Lindsay Road will be closed in both directions at the freeway. Drivers can use Gilbert Road or Val Vista Drive to cross Loop 202.
