Flagstaff man sentenced to 20 months in prison for arson in Grand Canyon National Park

PHOENIX – A U.S. District judge sentenced a Flagstaff man to nearly two years in prison for arson in the Grand Canyon, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona announced on Tuesday.
Dahntay Dunbar, 21, was sentenced to 20 months in prison, five years of supervised release and was ordered to pay $20,146.13 in restitution.
The punishment comes from an incident on the night of May 17 and the morning of May 18. Dunbar pushed his way into a locked cabin, which belonged to his ex-girlfriend, at the Grand Canyon National Park. His ex-girlfriend was not home at the time.
While inside he poured a bottle of clear liquor on a bed, lit his former girlfriend’s shirt on fire and put it on the bed. Dunbar left the cabin as the bed began to burn.
The cabin walls, ceiling and other parts of the cabin were damaged by the fire and smoke. A bystander put most of the fire out before responders arrived.
The National Park Service law enforcement rangers located Dunbar and arrested him on other charges, according to authorities. He confessed to the arson.
On July 8, Dunbar pleaded guilty to arson of a dwelling.
