PHOENIX — The southbound lanes of Interstate 17 experienced heavy delays on Sunday evening near Black Canyon City, the Arizona Department of Transportation said.
Traffic had been completely halted around 3:20 p.m. due to a crash, and a delay had started to build up beginning at Sunset Point.
Cars were proceeding along one lane about a half-hour later, by which point a 12-mile backup had developed between mileposts 244 and 256.

Drivers planning to return to the Valley from the higher terrain should plan for delays, and plan for a different route if possible.
At about 6:15 p.m., ADOT said the delays were clearing with all lanes open. Pockets of slower traffic remained from Cordes Junction to Black Canyon City.
Northbound lanes were unaffected.
