PHOENIX — The city of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department announced Thursday one of their facilities will be renamed as South Mountain Visitor Center in effort to improve the tourist experience.

Formally South Mountain Environmental Education Center, the name change was approved during a Parks and Recreation board meeting.

“The decision to change the name of the center was made to better reflect its purpose as a hub for visitors to South Mountain Park and Preserve,” Phoenix Parks and Recreation board chair Kelly Dalton said in a press release. “We want to make it clear that this center serves as a welcoming space for all who come to enjoy this beautiful park.”

Besides the strategic name simplification, the South Mountain Visitor Center is going through internal renovations. Upgraded exhibits are among the projects for the South Mountain Park and Reserve staff whose goal is to better tell the history of the desert environment.

The visitor’s hub will reopen on Nov. 8 in step with the park celebrating 100 years of city stewardship.

We want to hear from you.
