It wouldn’t hurt to get your AC checked after Arizona’s excruciating heat wave

PHOENIX — In Arizona, having an air conditioning unit is essential for staying comfortable indoors, especially during the excruciating triple-digit temperatures.
Although the end of a record-breaking summer heat is on the horizon, keeping up with air conditioning maintenance remains crucial.
Getting your air conditioner tuned up after the summer heat wave can help save money, extend the life of the unit and, most importantly, improve comfort.
A well-maintained AC can help you avoid indoor heat stroke and provide relief if you feel ill from being outside.
“Think about anything else you maintain like your truck or your body, preventative maintenance is always good for mechanical devices like an air conditioner,” said Justin Lang, HVAC service manager at Day & Night Air Conditioning, Heating and Plumbing.
“Something that gets dirty during a monsoon, like the coils, we cleanse it with some water and keep it clean. Checking on all the things that can go wrong with a unit, we check on, tighten and clean, doing our best to maintain it. Just like checking a truck every 3,000-5,000 miles, checking things that could potentially go wrong before it becomes a bigger issue.”
In addition to heat, rain and dust affect AC units.
The dust and humidity force air conditioners to work much harder.
“Humidity brings a real, big-time load on air conditioners, that’s when they really work to de-humidify spaces,” Lang said.
“With everything running perfectly and clean in an ideal situation, that does its job. Once you get a dust storm that rolls through those outside coils, whether it is on your roof or the side of your house, those get clogged with dirt.”
Basic maintenance involves more than just inspecting the unit itself. Factors such as filtration, shade structures, dirt buildup and ductwork are also crucial.
Dust storms often bring sticks and debris that can block the coils and restrict airflow, reducing the unit’s efficiency.
Additionally, dust, humidity and debris can impact a home’s filtration system, leading to higher monthly bills and further airflow restrictions.
Although summer is nearly behind us, it’s just as important to have your air conditioning unit checked in the winter as it is during the summer months. Many household appliances, like gas stoves, use the same motor that is involved in the heating and cooling system.
It’s important to get an AC tune-up at least once a year, but twice a year if you live in a warmer climate. Some signs that your AC potentially needs a tune-up include higher than expected energy bills, reduced airflow from vents and your AC isn’t keeping up with the temperature.
